The unofficial first lady of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1963 Trần Lệ Xuân was the wife of Ngo Dinh Diem’s brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu. Also known as Madame Nhu, Trần Lệ Xuân was heavily involved in government policy. Wesley Fishel described her as an “evil influence” to Diem, casting her as “brilliant, vivacious, bitchy and brutal in her Borgia-like fashion.”11 Records
